Morena deputy, Alberto Vanegas, presented an initiative in the Congress of Mexico City aimed at dignifying the working conditions of gas station, supermarket, hotel, and restaurant workers. Vanegas emphasized that many of these employees lack a base salary, benefits, and social security, despite the law establishing a minimum daily wage, which is often not met, with tips being their main source of income.
In the specific case of gas station workers, Vanegas pointed out that they face occupational hazards like fires and poisoning, without social security. Many employers evade responsibilities by improperly registering workers with the IMSS or not enrolling them in the health system. Additionally, employees often endure grueling shifts and precarious working conditions, lacking training and proper protective equipment.
On the other hand, Vanegas highlighted that wages for attendants vary among different companies, and tips are insufficient to cover basic expenses. This situation is mirrored in supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants, where the lack of formal contracts and social security leaves workers in a vulnerable position. The initiative proposes reforms to the Federal Labor Law to guarantee base salaries, benefits, and reduce dependence on tips in these sectors.
The proposal presented by Alberto Vanegas seeks to regulate and dignify the work of gas station, supermarket, hotel, and restaurant employees, promoting fairer working conditions in line with the vision of the Fourth Transformation. The initiative has been referred to the Labor and Social Security Committee for analysis.
